Charles Bradlaugh

CHARLES BRADLAUGH,

Once on a time when I lived in Jersey I got a letter from the poor authorities of Newark, taking me sharply to task for having helped an “unworthy” person. The letter stated, “we take care of our worthy poor.”

I replied, “This woman was not worthy, therefore, I knew you would not take care of her. That is why I assisted her.” -Celia Baldwin Whitehead, in the Public.
